The Hobbit is clearly a children’s book. A children’s book which would leave Tolkien as one of the greatest children’s authors had he stopped there.
The Fellowship successfully takes a world built for a children’s book and expands it for a very sophisticated trilogy.
It’s hard to put in words how this book grips me, and effects me. The fact that I finished the Fellowship, and immediately went into the Two Towers is some indication.
The Hobbit might be about the dangers you encounter when you leave the safety of your home.
The Fellowship of the Ring is about how sometimes you have to leave the safety of your home.
This is probably why I decided to read the books now. Sometimes you don’t have a choice. Even if you feel that you might not be directly affected by the dangers that are afoot.
